Excerpt from Sheriff Luke Ludd
Luke glanced back at the fire to see Pot's had poured another cup and as he took it up to his mouth he said, "You just going to shoot me out-right, or are you goin' to give me a fightin' chance?"
Realizing that pots knew he was there, luke answered, "I'll give you more of a chance than y'all gave those two old folks in Rising Star, but no more than I gave that murdering brother of yours back in Sweetwater."
"That old man kept hollerin' and carrying on ... he should have just gave us the money. That's all we wanted." There was a long pause, and with the cup still to his mouth, Pots asked, "You killed Leonard, did you?"
"Yes sir," Luke answered, "sure did. He's visiting with the devil right now."
Pots forced a chuckle, "He sure might be. And if'n he is you can bet he's givin' that old rascal trouble." The he asked, "Were you alone when you killed 'im?"
"Yes sir, I was."
"You must be a purty fair hand with your six-gun, mister, 'cause Leonard was mighty fast with his, and a dead shot."
"I don't know for sure, but maybe he was just a dead shot when it came to killin' old, defenseless women and men. To be honest, Pots I really don't know what kind of shot he was for sure, 'cause his gun never cleared leather. Matter fact his hand never made it as far as touching the butt."
"You don't say," Pots mumbled. "Was any of my brothers with 'im?"
